Nude Up People . . . Just Wear a Helmet
This weekend in Melbourne hundreds of cyclists will get their ‘kit off’ to raise awareness for “dooring”. This is when you park your car and forget to look for cyclists riding past in the bike lane and they have an unfortunate collision with your door. I have seen this happen first hand on a recent trip to Brunswick Street ( Melb) where a lad was badly injured. Whilst I believe we need to change our behaviour in regards to motorist/cyclist safety to prevent accidents , I do find it amusing how us Aussies change the goalposts when it comes to nudity.
If someone decides to streak across the Adelaide Oval they would most likely get a lifetime ban and a $5000 fine imposed. If they put a helmet on, grab a bike and do it with friends in the street, this is amazingly acceptable. We have public outrage at the nude Olympics at Maslin Beach ( in a secluded part of our coastline) where the only injury risk during the nude volleyball would be a ‘pulled muscle’. Yet we stay silent and run the risk of a potential ‘chain related’ injury to some of our male ‘members’ of the public on a naked bike run. As long they wear a helmet….all is ok.
I am no wowser, but if one of the cyclists rode past a playground on his way home from the naked ride, would this not raise the eyebrows of protective parents and possibly police?
Nudity is nothing new and we still get thousands of naked people in the streets laying on top of each other for a single photograph in the name of art (refer Spencer Tunick). My question is when will the nudity police get out their truncheons and enforce the law in a consistent manner?
