Bali Highlights – More Aussies Go Directly To Jail
Kerobokan Jail in Bali that is…
This jail is considered one of the most notorious prisons in the world. Former home to Schapelle Corby, and current home for the infamous Bali 9 (minus 2). I have always had a fascination for prisons and are my favourite genre of movie. I nearly had the opportunity recently to visit Yatala Jail in Adelaide, but missed out by a few days when the person I was to visit was transferred to Cadell Low Security Prison. All the local drivers know Schapelle Corby’s story and probably get asked by every Australian tourist that visits Bali.
Kerobokan was a Bali ‘must see’ attraction for me. My wife Tanya made us all laugh when she had a blonde moment and asked our driver to take us to Copacabana Prison (she couldn’t say Kerobokan). The jail itself is not huge, and is old, rusted and run down. The traffic around the jail is extremely hectic and it took us almost 10 minutes to cross the road. We tried to walk around the perimeter to get some scale, but could only get around two sides. It was eery to hear the warden/ guards bellowing over the PA system to the prisoners.m The fact that Australians are locked in there for very long sentences and has gained international attention made the visit really authentic.
